Big subjects feel impossible because you see them all at once. “Learn data analysis” has no first step. The fix is to treat the topic as a grid of smaller, connected pieces.
1. Write down the outcome, not the subject
Instead of “learn Python”, write what you want to be able to do: “write a script that cleans a spreadsheet”. An outcome tells you which parts matter now and which can wait.
2. List the building blocks
Brainstorm every concept or skill the outcome depends on. Don’t sort yet. Aim for 12 to 20 items.
3. Arrange them in rows
Sort the blocks into foundations, core skills and applications. Within each row, order items from simplest to hardest.
A topic you can see in pieces is a topic you can start today.
4. Work one square at a time
Each square should fit in one sitting. When you finish one, spend two minutes noting how it connects to its neighbours.
5. Revisit the grid weekly
Add squares you discover, remove ones that didn’t matter, and review the ones that felt shaky.
